The Ronnie James Dio Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund (www.diocancerfund.org) was formed in memory of the legendary rock singer Ronnie James Dio, who lost his life to gastric cancer in 2010.  A privately funded 501(c)(3) public charity, the Ronnie James Dio Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund has already raised well over $1 million since its inception. Monies raised have been committed to the cancer research work of the T. J. Martell Foundation for Cancer, AIDS and Leukemia Research, the gastric cancer research unit of the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, where Ronnie was treated for gastric cancer during the last six months of his life, and other cancer research projects. Most recently, the Dio Cancer Fund has committed funds to support the research of Dr. David Wong and his team at the UCLA School of Dentistry in developing a simple, non-invasive saliva test for the early detection of cancer, which is in keeping with the Fund’s mission of cancer prevention, research and education.

About Ronnie James Dio:

The beloved singer, regarded as one of the greatest voices in Heavy Metal announced via Wendy Dio that he was diagnosed with stomach cancer and was being treated at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, but that he would be back on stage when recovered. He died in 2010. Besides being the award winning singer of Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Dio and Heaven & Hell, he was known for being one of the most generous singers in rock. His death affected everyone in the community and prompted a movement of cancer awareness and early detection.

Every year, to keep Ronnie’s name alive, Wendy and her team at the foundation host 2 events to fundraise for cancer research (a motorcade and a bowling red carpet event). Last year, the motorcade featured stars from the hit TV show “Sons of Anarchy”. This year, the motorcade (hosted by VH1’s Eddie Trunk) will take place on Sunday, May 7 in Glendale, CA. May is the month for cancer awareness, I feel that this piece is important because it spotlights a foundation who is working on not only finding a cure but spreading awareness on early detection.
