Gastric cancer took the life of one of rock & metal’s most angelic voices, Ronnie James Dio (watch his last interview)
Ronald James Padavona (July 10, 1942 – May 16, 2010), better known professionally as Ronnie James Dio or simply Dio, was an American singer, songwriter, and musician. He fronted and/or founded numerous groups including Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Dio, and Heaven & Hell. He is credited with popularizing the “metal horns” hand gesture in metal culture and was known for his medieval-themed lyrics. Dio possessed a powerful versatile vocal range capable of singing both hard rock and lighter ballads.
Along with having a prolific career, shattering barriers for metal and rock bands, he was considered one of the most altruistic rock stars. He founded the Dio cancer fund upon diagnosis to help others get through such a devastating diagnosis and to ultimately find a cure plus open up dialogue on the importance of early detection, screenings and research!
Previous years, celebrity appearances at The Ride for Ronnie included: cast members of Sons of Anarchy, star of Pitbulls and Paroles, Steven Adler, Eddie Money, etc. It is an incredible event in which Wendy Dio presents a check to Dr. David Wong and his team at UCLA. Wendy Dio and her team have made it a mission to spread awareness of the importance of screenings and to hopefully find a cure for gastric cancer which took Ronnie James Dio’s life in 2010.
